In his inaugural season with the Vipers, Phelan skippered the team to an impressive 29-18-2 record. Coach Phelan has an overall youth baseball coaching record of 61-27-2. Highlighting the 2010 season were trips to the semifinals in the Lockport Lockdown, Downers Grove Longshots (3rd Place), New Lenox Rebels 4th of July Invitational(3rd Place), punctuated by winning the Mayor's Cup in Battlecreek Michigan.
Playing his high school baseball at Lemont Township High School, he earned both All-NEC, All-Will County 2nd Team honors as a secondbaseman by his Sophomore year, and was nominated by the Will County Area Sports Writers Association to the East VS West All-Star Game. Coach Phelan continued his career past high school playing for Coach Wayne King (Joliet Mohawks, Joliet Junior College) and for Coach Jeff Stewart (ISU Redbirds). During his time with the Mohawks, Phelan started at secondbase in the same infield with Scott Speizo (Anaheim Angels, Oakland A's). His teams have been called "full of hustle", "motivated", "hard-nosed, and "well-disciplined."
Coaches:
Jim Phelan (Pitching)(630)257-7527
Bio: Coach Jim Phelan is a veteran youth baseball coach who served as pitching coach throughout the 1980's and 1990's in Lemont Little League and in Lockport since 2007. His concentration has been in the 10-12 year old age group, and he has contributed by instructing the basic mechanics for many outstanding area pitchers. Formerly a high school standout for the Hinsdale Central Red Devils as a centerfielder, Coach Jim was invited to the scout camp of the Pittsburgh Pirates for a tryout in 1965. That year the Pirates featured none other than Roberto Clemente in their outfield. He has been a member of the younger Phelan's staff with the Lockport Pirates, and continues to be an advocate, mentor, and promoter of youth baseball. "Coach Jim" is proud to be a member of the 2010 Vipers.
Bio: Coach Bill Jackson grew up on the South Side of Chicago playing baseball at West Lawn Little League while mostly playing the outfield and catching. Although his son has played for Lockport Baseball for 5 years, he just last year ventured into coaching youth baseball. In his first season, he led the Red Sox to a 16-3 record, share of the Division's best record, and a Mustang Division Crown. He went on to be an assistant coach for the Lockport 10 U All-Star team which compiled an 8-2 record including a Championship in their hometown Lockport All-Star Tournament. Coach Bill will be helping the boys refine their skills in the outfield along with coaching duties at first base.
Dan Harder (Catchers, Bench Coach)
Bio: Coach Dan Harder is very honored to be a part of the 11U Vipers. Coach Dan is a returning coach in Lockport Boy's Baseball for six years running. He has worked with many of the league's finest. He was a coach for the Lockport All-Stars the last 3 seasons and was part of the 10U traveling All-Stars that won Lockport's traveling All-Star Tourney in 2009.
As a youth, Harder started out as a typical Little Leaguer, playing baseball until he was 16 years old. He played both Pony and Colt League Baseball at Ingalls Park in Joliet. Harder played his high school ball at Joliet East.
Coach Dan feels that at this age level that the team can achieve more by maintaining a good attitude, and then the effort will be right there. His favorite quote comes from Cupid's father , and it pertains to perseverance-- "Son, Shoot for the Moon, for even if you miss your Arrow will land among the stars." (or in this case-- All-stars). "Coach Dan" will primarily work with the catchers throughout the 2010 season. Harder is proud to be a part of this group of outstanding boys.
Eric Garcia (Bull Pen Assistant, Batting Practice Pitcher)
Bio: Coach Garcia is the newest edition to the Viper's staff. He was named as Bullpen Assistant in the Fall of 2009. Garcia, formerly with the Lockport Cobras in 2007-2009, began as the Viper's batting practice pitcher in early August. Acknowledging a calm demeanor with developing players, and respecting his ability to learn quickly "on the go," pitching coach Jim Phelan suggested Garcia be named to work in the bullpen with him as an assistant. Garcia is a welcomed addition to the staff for 2010.
